During my tenure as Director of Multimedia at Sound Video Impressions, we were approached by Brand Identity at Illinois Tool Works, who were looking for a unique interactive application to be deployed on their website.
The client provided custom credit card design materials and services to credit card issuers such as financial institutions, including custom foils and holographic layers.
As I developed this application in Unity, I learned a lot about the construction of a credit card. They're like sandwiches of thin layers of materials, from the base plastic to the different laminate layers that form the design on the front and back of the card.
The biggest challenge I overcame with this project was 3D modeling and texturing a card with swappable materials that would convincingly animate the holographic films. A video camera, a turntable, and some actual holographic film samples provided by the client were used to document how the holograms should change as the card rotates relative to the virtual camera.
Since this project was completed several years ago, Unity discontinued their web player, so it's difficult to reliably show this application in action now. Included below is a screen recording of the app in operation.
