I've had the chance to participate in a series of winemaking classes over the last few years, and I've been tasked with designing a couple of labels for the wines. The story behind each appears beside the label design.
Heart Condition
The Malley family wanted to commemorate the fact that Jason, their patriarch, had recovered from heart surgery the year before their winemaking class. Calling on Jason's deep connection to his Irish roots, I chose a Celtic knot design motif, using colors found in the Book of Kells.
The outer golden heart represents Jason's own mended heart and is intertwined with three smaller hearts within, representing his wife and their two children, with life-affirming greenery vining through and binding them all together, symbolizing their strong family bonds. The Malleys were thrilled to have this design adorn their bottles of tempranillo. (The wine they made was delicious too!)
Sept Amis
French for "seven friends," this wine was the result of a blending class we took, in which our group of seven winemakers got to put our collective stamp on the final blend by making different varietals and blending them together through a process of tasting and judging the results of several tries.
The label design comes out of my love of typography, and it incorporates the first initial of each person in our group of seven, overlapping and combining to create harmonious whole.
